The benefits of broccoli

Why we’re keen on the green

Each flavour of Growers Garden broccoli crisps is gluten-free, vegan-friendly, and available in both 24g and 84g bags but the question you may have is, why broccoli? Why not, say, parsnip? (Great question, and actually, parsnip crisps is something we’re looking at right now so hold that thought.)

The main reason we started with broccoli is that many of our local farmers had quite a lot left over one particular year and we wondered what on earth to do with them. And it just so happens that broccoli is a very popular vegetable with shoppers so it made sense to make our first crisp a broccoli one.

What makes broccoli so good is its fantastic health benefits, not just its great taste. It’s a bit of a superhero to be frank. Check out these powers:

Low in calories, fat and carbs

Due to its high water content, broccoli is very low in calories. A 76 gram serving of raw broccoli contains just 24 kcals, 6% carbs and almost no fat.

A surprising source of protein

Munching on our favourite veggie is a tasty way to help meet your daily protein needs. With 2 grams of protein per serving, broccoli is a lean, green, muscle-building machine.

Promotes great gut health

We all love the florets, but did you know that broccoli stalks are an excellent source of fibre? Eating a diet rich in fibre can support digestive health and help to feed good bacteria in your gut.

Loaded with vitamins and minerals

Broccoli is bursting with a huge range of nutrients, including vitamins C, A, K and B9 (also known as folate) and essential minerals like iron, calcium, zinc, potassium and magnesium.

An inflammation-fighting superfood

This humble green veg is also full of potent antioxidants and bioactive plant compounds that can help to reduce inflammation and support the health of cells and tissues throughout your body.

Keeping it local

The way we make our crisps ensures there is as little waste as possible. Keeping everything local keeps everything fresh and is better for the environment too. You can find out more about that here.
